Role: Research Fellow, University of Edinburgh
Timeline: July 2012 – December 2015
Design in Action (DiA) was a £5m Art and Humanities Research Council-funded Knowledge Exchange Hub for the Creative Economy. The project also received £400k from Creative Scotland to support SMEs that utilise design as a strategy for innovation, both within and out with the creative economy
My role in the project was to conceptual, organise and help to deliver residential sandpit events (called chiasma) in the ICT sector to generate new businesses. This included building relationships across the technology sector in Scotland, leading to ongoing conversations and collaborations. Specific themes included 1) a Technology Accelerator chiasma that brought academics from the field of medical visualisation together with designers and SMEs to capitalise on existing University of Dundee IP, and 2) a Creative Currencies chiasma with RBS that drew developers, designers, and users of cryptocurrencies together to envisage the future of cryptocurrencies. This has subsequently evolved into an emerging strand of personal and research centre focus.
